On modern vehicles, alignment work and driver-assistance calibration are connected services — many calibrations follow alignment-related work, which is why so many shops plan the two capabilities together. This guide covers the planning considerations: the services you intend to offer, the equipment categories involved, and how to structure the purchase.
This is a business-planning guide, not a technical manual. Calibration procedures, target placement and vehicle-specific requirements come from the equipment manufacturer and OEM documentation — never from a financing website.
START WITH THE SERVICES
The equipment follows from the work you intend to sell. Alignment service alone, alignment plus calibration, or calibration as the core business — each scope points to a different equipment list and a different bay. A tire shop adding alignment has different needs from a collision centre adding post-repair calibration, and the plan should say so before the purchase does.
THE EQUIPMENT CATEGORIES
A combined alignment + calibration capability usually draws from the same handful of equipment families. Actual package composition varies with the equipment, the vehicles and the space — there is no universal bill of materials.
PLANNING A COMBINED BAY?
Not sure which equipment package fits the plan? Ask a question — tell us the services you're building toward and we'll help you scope it.
ASK A QUESTIONSPACE & LAYOUT — HIGH-LEVEL ONLY
A combined bay usually needs a level, clear work area, appropriate lighting for camera-based work, and enough room for the vehicle, the rack, and the calibration equipment to be positioned as the equipment manufacturer's documentation requires. Exact dimensions, floor specifications and lighting values are engineering questions — your equipment supplier documents what their systems need for your space.
Shops converting an existing bay and shops building new both succeed; the difference is usually planning. Walk the space with your vendor's equipment requirements in hand before you sign anything.
THE ALIGNMENT ↔ CALIBRATION RELATIONSHIP
Many vehicles require calibration after alignment-related work — suspension, steering, glass, bumper and structural repairs can all put driver-assistance systems out of specification. That connection is why alignment equipment and calibration equipment are so often planned as one project: the shop that can align and calibrate finishes the whole job instead of sending the last step elsewhere.
That said, the two capabilities can also be built in stages — alignment first, calibration second, or calibration added to an existing alignment operation. Phasing is a legitimate plan, and each stage can be its own financing project.
VENDOR PLANNING & QUOTES
A combined bay usually means at least one equipment vendor, sometimes several. Ask each vendor for a written quote or proposal covering the equipment, the accessories, the software, the installation requirements and the training they provide. A complete quote is what makes a combined purchase easy to review for financing — it shows the whole project in one document.
Bringing quotes from more than one supplier? That's normal. A multi-vendor project can be described in one application, each piece with its own line.
FINANCING THE PROJECT
Alignment systems, racks, calibration systems, targets, positioning equipment and diagnostics can all be part of one financing application — and directly related costs such as installation or freight may be considered as part of the request depending on the transaction. The Alignment & ADAS Equipment Package page covers the combined purchase in detail.
