Clean compressed-air system with a dryer, filtration units and organized air lines along a bright professional body shop wall.

Refinish air is not service-bay air. The same compressor that runs impact wrenches can ruin a paint job if moisture, oil or particulates ride the line to the gun — which is why refinish operations plan their compressed air as an equipment system, not a utility.

This guide covers that system at the business level: the air-quality layers, what each protects, and how air equipment joins the refinish build. Air-engineering specifics and pipe-sizing belong to your vendor and the equipment manufacturers — this is about choosing, quoting and financing.

THE AIR-QUALITY LAYERS

DRYING

Refrigerated and desiccant air dryers — the moisture layer
Dryer selection by the shop's climate and duty (Canadian winters matter)

FILTRATION & REGULATION

Particulate, coalescing and final-stage filtration
Regulation and point-of-use filtration at refinish stations

DISTRIBUTION

Air piping and drop layouts planned with your vendor
Hose reels and point-of-use connections in prep and booth areas

THE COMPRESSOR ITSELF

No sizing calculations here — capacity and specification conversations belong with your equipment vendor and the manufacturer's requirements.

WHY AIR IS A REFINISH DECISION

Every refinish defect that traces back to the air line is rework — booth hours lost to a finish that has to be redone. Shops that plan drying, filtration and distribution as part of the refinish system treat air the way they treat the booth: equipment with a job to do, not plumbing that happens to exist.

It's also a scalability decision: a shop adding prep stations and curing equipment is adding air demand, and the air system has to be planned for the refinish operation it will run, not just the one it runs today.

Air, booth, prep and extraction quotes can ride in one application — upload them and FixFin works from your supplier's numbers.

ALUMINUM AND HIGH-TECH COATINGS

Shops taking on aluminum work or modern coating systems generally hold their air to the strictest standard in the building — another reason the air-quality layers travel with the rest of an aluminum or refinish equipment package. Your vendor's guidance on air quality for the coatings you run is part of the quote conversation.

QUOTES & FINANCING

Ask your vendor for an itemized quote covering the dryer, filtration stages, distribution and connection hardware, and the compressor where it's part of the project. Air equipment is commonly financed with booth, prep, mixing and extraction equipment as one refinish package.
