NEW VS USED
DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

THE TOOL IS THE SOFTWARE. How to weigh new against used diagnostic equipment — licensing, subscriptions, coverage and support are what actually decide the deal.

AUDIENCE: SHOP OWNERS & OPERATORS6 MIN READLAST UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 2026REVIEWED BY FIXFIN EQUIPMENT FINANCE TEAM

Diagnostic equipment is the most software-driven category in the shop — which makes its used market fundamentally different from lifts, tire changers and air compressors. The hardware can be perfect and the tool can still be nearly useless if the software situation around it is wrong.

There's no universal answer — new isn't automatically better, and used isn't automatically a bargain. This guide covers the factors that decide it for diagnostic equipment specifically.

THE DIAGNOSTIC DIFFERENCE

A used lift is a used lift: capacity and condition tell most of the story. A used scan platform is a bundle of hardware, software, licensing, subscriptions, accounts and support — and most of that bundle doesn't automatically transfer with the machine. That single fact shapes every used-diagnostics decision.

WHAT MATTERS MOST WITH USED DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT

SOFTWARE LICENSING — confirm with the seller and manufacturer; it doesn't automatically transfer
SUBSCRIPTIONS — which services renew, what they cost, and their status in the sale — confirm with the vendor
VEHICLE COVERAGE — whether the platform still reaches the vehicles you service
UPDATES & SUPPORT — whether the manufacturer still supports the equipment generation
ACCOUNT REGISTRATION — whether the tool is tied to the previous owner's account, and what transfer requires
ACCESSORIES — leads, cables, adapters and modules originally sold with the unit
CONDITION & DOCUMENTATION — the seller's records describing the actual unit

Don't assume anything transfers with the machine. What's confirmed in writing with the seller and the manufacturer is what everyone can rely on.

WHAT NEW EQUIPMENT BUYS

New diagnostic equipment arrives with current vehicle coverage, active support, clean licensing and a warranty where applicable — which is why most shops buy scan platforms and programming hardware new. For the most software-driven tools, new is the route most operations choose.

Where the hardware is durable and less software-dependent — battery support units, electrical test equipment, scopes — eligible used equipment can be worth considering, with the buyer verifying condition and completeness.

NO UNIVERSAL ANSWER

The right route depends on the category, the specific unit, the seller, the transaction and the shop's plans. Evaluate each piece on its own facts — and where a mixed new-and-used package is the plan, describe each piece exactly as it's being bought and ask about the structure.

FINANCING EITHER ROUTE

Where eligible, both new and used diagnostic equipment may be considered — on its own or within a larger diagnostic package. The application should describe the equipment exactly as it's being bought, with the written quote attached.
